Bowen Science

 

Our science department offers phenomena-based instruction in physics, chemistry, and biology, including AP biology. Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, and looking beyond just fulfilling graduation requirements, Bowen focuses on engaging students in robust scientific curriculum while also providing learners with the opportunity to utilize their inherent funds-of-knowledge. We accomplish this by weaving a narrative through observation, scientific research, and mathematical predictive modeling in order to create an environment where students can explore the world around them. We work to build a better understanding of the living universe throughout a student's high school career.

 

  • In biology, freshman students will learn about the visible world with a focus on environmental interactions. They will explore the structure and function of matter and energy in organisms, inheritance and variation of traits, natural selection, and evolution. 
  • In chemistry, sophomore students will narrow their focus to the interactions of chemical systems and the transformation of energy that takes place within them. They will interact with mathematical representations of reactions as well as the reactions themselves, much as they will in a college setting.
  • In physics, junior students will learn about the underlying principles of energy and matter through visible phenomena and predictive models, ultimately culminating in the scientific basis of the origins and future of our universe. Additionally, through our partnership with the University of Chicago, we are one of only a few pilot schools exploring applications of quantum computing and encryption, ensuring our physics students are prepared for the challenges of future industry.
  • Finally, students who choose to do so may take AP biology, which is a robust, AP-certified program proven to be an excellent stepping stone to a career in medicine or environmental science. 

 

Our highly-qualified professional educators work with students in order to design and implement learning paths that have relevance to the individual. In assessing student interest in the process, we ensure that knowledge and skills are retained, having built upon what students already understand and care about. It is our goal to produce college-ready scientists with the critical thinking skills, curiosity, and self-efficacy to be successful in whatever future they choose for themselves.
